Angharad Powell
Speaker at the Low Carb Universe 2018
General Practitioner, Nutritional Medicine
I am a General Practitioner, living and working between North Wales and Cyprus, and am passionate about using low carbohydrate and ketogenic diets to improve health and well-being.
I have a broad range of clinical interests and I completed an intercalated degree in International Health before qualifying. After medical school I went on to obtain postgraduate qualifications in General Practice, Occupational Medicine, Psychiatry, Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Sexual health and am currently studying for a Masters degree in Nutritional Medicine.
I have been interested in role of low carb and keto in health since 2013 when I first read Gary Taubes, lost 80lb and immeasurably improve my health. BBC1 Wales interviewed me for a documentary – “Fat v Carbs with Jamie Owen”, and I continue to lecture regularly on LCHF/keto to fellow health professionals. My view is that diabetes does not have to be a chronic and progressive disease with inevitable complications, and during 2017 I was lucky enough to be funded to run a low carb educational programme for patients with diabetes and pre-diabetes in my locality, with over 30% of the participants achieving reversal. In addition to my work with diabetes I have been successful in using keto / low carb to manage conditions such as PCOS, acne and infertility.
I continue to learn and revise my understanding of the interplay between diet and health having recognised the importance of nutrition and how my conventional training failed to address this.
